Japanese companies were outperforming US competitors in product development in the 1980s. Experts believed the US industry's weakness was
integration between manufacturing-process design and product design, and marketing, purchasing, and finance. Toyota manages its vehicle-development
process effectively but does not follow the model of Japanese product development.
